  • Northern Powerhouse Minister puts science at the forefront of his vision for the Northern Powerhouse
  • Experts at the Business of Science Conference discuss the role science should play in unlocking environmental challenges faced locally and globally
  • Leeds City Council Chief Executive says more meaningful conversations about the role of science and tech need to take place amid challenging times

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, Jake Berry MP, pledged his commitment to putting science and academia at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, at this year’s Business of Science Conference 2019.

Joining the conference via video link, the MP hailed the North as a world leader in science and pledged his continued commitment to backing the N8 Research Partnership to strengthen science and academia in the region.

Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, Jake Berry MP, said:

“Cities across the Northern Powerhouse have long been at the forefront of scientific research, development and innovation.

“The Government’s ambition is to build a highly productive, globally facing Northern economy and that is why we’re encouraging science and innovation in the North with over £300 million of investment to support excellence in research and scientific advancement.”

The conference, which was held in Leeds’ Cloth Hall Court, welcomed keynote speakers including the Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, Tom Riordan, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, Pip Clode, Catherine Manning, Prinicple Associate at Eversheds Sutherland and Dr. Geoff Mackey, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at BASF.

With expertise spanning a variety of industry sectors, each speaker discussed the pivotal role science can play in solving present and future global issues relating to sustainability, climate change and energy efficiency.

Steve Bennett, Founder and Managing Director of Business of Science, said:

“The Business of Science Conference is in its fourth year and has seen over 200 delegates and experts come together to discuss the important role science has to play in our everyday lives. In particular, this year’s conference has explored the environmental challenges we face globally, and suggested how the application of science and scientific thinking can be the key to overcoming the very real challenges of our times.

“Discussion focused on the need to make scientific approaches to environmental challenges commercially viable so that we can drive the behavioural change needed among consumers and industry sectors.

“The conference plays an important role in bringing together stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines, and outlooks. In looking to extend our reach beyond the North of England, we’re pleased to announce that we will be taking the conference to Birmingham in 2020.”

Delegates enjoyed a combination of panel discussions, breakout and interactive sessions at the conference, covering topics such as the business of space, diversity in STEM and the commercialisation of 2D materials.

At a pre-conference dinner on Wednesday 15th May, the Business of Science Leadership and Special Recognition Awards acknowledged key players working in science. The four winners for 2019 were:

  • Private sector SME – Harry Swan, Thomas Swan & Co
  • Private sector large – Mark Fletcher, Arup
  • Public / charity sector – Prof. Rasmita Raval, University of Liverpool
  • Special recognition – Professor John Fisher, University of Leeds

As a new addition for this year, the Business of Science also celebrated ‘science dreams’ through its Innovation Award, open to individuals of all ages – from primary through secondary school and into late careers. The winning entries were showcased in-front of delegates, speakers and sponsors at the event.
