Three content creating businesses from across the North West have chosen The Sharp Project, Manchester’s creative hub, as their new base.

Megacity Digital who specialist in online broadcast production, radio production specialists SparkLab Productions, and game and app developers Nonatomic, have all moved in over the summer months.

Independent production company, Megacity Digital has been created by presenter OJ Borg and TV production specialist Tom Howells, who met when they worked together at BBC Sport at MediaCityUK.

Specialising in sport, the pair are realising a long-held ambition to work together and focus on live broadcasting for social media including Facebook, YouTube and Twitch.

OJ Borg has recently been working for BBC 5 Live presenting on both radio & Facebook Live from the Tour de France, and the Megacity Digital has been commissioned by the Bike Channel to produce ‘100 Things To Do On Your Bike Before You Die’.

Based in one of The Sharp Project’s converted shipping container, the duo plan to add an edit suite and build a small studio for podcasts.

Tom Howells from Whalley Range explains: “The Sharp Project’s ethos of collaboration and developing start-ups really inspired us to move in. It’s really exciting here and the perfect environment for Megacity Digital to develop.”

Radio production company SparkLab Productions provide radio content to the BBC including Radio 4, 5 Live, World Service and Radio 3, 2 and 1. Co-founded by Mel Harris and Jo Meek, Mel specialises in drama while Jo‘s area of expertise is factual and she frequently has work commissioned for national radio programmes.

Jo Meek, joint managing director, who lives in Glossop explained: “We believe our USP is the quality of our story telling.  Not only do we bring a fresh sound to Radio 4 drama but we tell a lot of powerful human stories.  We’re not afraid to tackle taboos and give the hard-to-reach a voice. Compelling story telling and predicting what might be bubbling as untold issues next year is the key to getting commissions and so we’re constantly looking for the next hot topic.

“The Sharp Project really suits us, not least for the practical reasons.  It’s easily accessible, has car parking and offers competitive rates. It’s great to be in such close proximity to sound designer Eloise Whitmore for editing and 80 Hertz recording studio too.”

The Sharp Project’s newest tenant is Nonatomic who have moved from their previous base in Macclesfield.

Nonatomic was established 5 years ago by Paul Stamp and Dean Nicholls, former colleagues at Warner Bro’s Playdemic Studio in Wilmslow.

Nonatomic produce games, mobile apps and digital experiences with a heavy focus on Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. The developers have high profile clients including Siemens, MotoGP and the BBC.

Dean Nicholls, Co-founder of Nonatomic said: “We fell in love with The Sharp Project as soon as we saw the place.  The move really made sense for us.  It’s great to be with other small businesses in the space and we hope to partner-up with neighbours. We’re also nearer to our clients which is good. We hope to grow the business and build a team and being located here will help us do that.”
