Cheshire IT firm calls on businesses to stay safe this Computer Security Day

Cheshire IT specialist Highstream Solutions is aiming to boost awareness of IT security among the region’s business community.

To coincide with the national campaign, the Highstream team is sharing a range of top tips and helpful apps for staying cyber-safe, particular for tech-savvy firms that rely on PCs and networked computers.

“Electronic devices, cloud-based services, remote working and smart phones are making our business lives easier than ever,” said Highstream Solutions Director, Paul Williams. “But they are also adding a layer of complexity when it comes to computer security. They certainly make things more efficient and convenient, but it is important to be aware of the many privacy and security issues we all face as business owners.

“Online security is a priority for many of our clients – and quite rightly – so it’s important that we constantly explore and develop new ways of keeping IT systems safe and cyber-attackers at bay.

“This Computer Security Day, we’re reminding people to continue to stay on top of computer security and often that can mean taking some small, simple steps to improving their cyber-security and keeping data safe.”

Highstream Solutions has issued the following top tips for regional business owners:

Protect yourself against external threats and viruses

It’s important to utilise the best possible software and we’d always suggest something like Microsoft 365 Business. This type of integrated solution comes with Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection and Windows Defender Exploit Guard which work to keep sensitive data controlled and managed.

Change and protect passwords

Using the same password consistently, or the same password for all online accounts can make users vulnerable to hackers. Spend this Computer Security Day changing and updating passwords.

We recommend using LastPass to securely store your passwords too. This free tool can save all passwords and secure information on a selected computer and can only be accessed by a “Master” password which only the user knows. Last Pass can also auto-generate unique passwords for accounts to reduce the chance of being hacked.

Delete internet cookies

Most cookies are harmless, but others can be used to track a user’s every move and make it much easier for accounts to be compromised. Delete cookies every now and again or set your browser to not accept them. This will minimise any tracking attempts and reduce the risk of a security breach.

Back up data

It’s essential that data is protected through backing up systems and will ensure business can continue in the event of an issue. An automated back-up routine using cloud services takes the weight of responsibility from business owners but they must also be aware that certain problems can be prevented much more quickly with an up-to-date, backup set of data.

Working from The Cloud

Using cloud-based email and data platforms such as Microsoft 365 Business strengthens the protection around data and documents. The system can also alert users when certain types of data including financial information or important personal data before it is dispatched to an outside destination.
